Open seminar “Photojournalism and Visual Narratives in Reporting Humanitarian Crises”

At the Ban Ki-moon Institute for Sustainable Development at Al-Farabi KazNU, open seminars dedicated to sustainable development have commenced. The first seminar focused on the topic “Photojournalism and Visual Narratives in Reporting Humanitarian Crises” led by invited lecturer Asylkhan Abdrayim, the head of the public organization “PhotoOner.” The meeting proved to be incredibly engaging and beneficial for the students of the Faculty of Journalism at Al-Farabi KazNU.
Photojournalism serves as a powerful tool in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, as it draws public attention to critical social, environmental, and economic issues. Through vivid visual narratives, it tells stories that can act as catalysts for change, raising awareness about humanitarian crises, climate change, and social injustice. Visual materials evoke emotional responses that inspire individuals to take action and support initiatives aimed at creating a sustainable future.
During the seminar, participants had the opportunity to explore various aspects of photojournalism, including ethical standards, shooting techniques, and methods for creating compelling visual narratives. The discussion of successful projects and campaigns that utilized photojournalism to promote sustainable development allowed participants to see how impactful visual content can alter perceptions and behaviors.
Furthermore, participants were introduced to new technologies and platforms that offer additional avenues for disseminating visual stories and increasing their impact. In the context of digitalization and social media, photojournalism is becoming increasingly accessible and relevant, enabling individuals to become not only consumers of content but also active participants in the process of creating and sharing information.
Thus, the seminar highlighted the importance of photojournalism as a tool not only for informing but also for inspiring action that can lead to positive societal changes and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
