UN in Almaty: Partnership for a Sustainable Future
February 13, 2025 – A roundtable discussion on the topic “UN in Almaty: Partnership for a Sustainable Future” was held at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
The event was organized by Lyazzat Mukhtar, Acting Director of the Ban Ki-moon Institute at KazNU, and Leyla Fedorovna Delovarova, Director of the Academic Regional Resource Center for Information Support on the UN. The guest of honor was Vlastimil Samek, representative of the UN Department of Global Communications in Almaty.
Special attention was given to the role of youth in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Students from the Faculty of International Relations presented videos showcasing the work of the center and the opening of the UN office at the Kazakhstan Hotel, emphasizing the importance of youth involvement in global processes. They also encouraged their peers to actively engage in joint projects promoting sustainable development. Students from the Faculty of History made a significant contribution by presenting an analysis of the historical aspects of international cooperation and the impact of global initiatives on regional development. They also highlighted the importance of studying history within the context of sustainable development and international relations.
During the roundtable, key aspects of the UN’s partnership with Kazakhstan were discussed, including issues related to the economy, education, and social policy. Vlastimil Samek noted, “The UN actively engages with Kazakhstan on a wide range of issues, and the contribution of young people to solving global challenges is of utmost importance. Such meetings not only provide information but also inspire students to participate in international projects.”
Students actively asked questions regarding current issues of international cooperation with the UN. Representatives from the Faculty of Journalism and the Faculty of History contributed to the discussion by exploring the role of media and historical analysis in achieving global goals.
The roundtable became an important platform for dialogue between young people and international organizations, opening new opportunities for cooperation and the implementation of innovative projects in Kazakhstan.
