KazNU’s Cooperation with Governmental and International Partners on Water Security

Overview

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University continues to develop cooperation with government authorities, international organisations and expert institutions on water security, water resources management and climate change adaptation in the water sector.

### Cooperation with IWMI and the Blue Peace Central Asia Initiative

[On 27 August 2025, the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management at Al-Farabi KazNU hosted a scientific consultation on climate change adaptation in the water sector](https://farabi.university/news/97841?lang=en).

The consultation was organised by the International Water Management Institute — IWMI in cooperation with Al-Farabi KazNU and with the support of the Blue Peace Central Asia initiative. Representatives of CAREC, GIZ, UNESCO and leading research institutions of Kazakhstan participated in the event.

The participants discussed water scarcity, accelerated glacier melting, increasing cross-sectoral competition for water resources and the development of regional cooperation. As an outcome of the consultation, a table of research priorities was developed for inclusion in a regional meta-study and the Vision document for the Regional Environmental Summit 2026.

Further evidence of this cooperation is provided by [the working meeting between Al-Farabi KazNU and IWMI representatives held on 22 April 2025 under the Water Diplomacy educational programme](https://farabi.university/news/96313?lang=en).

The meeting addressed:

- strengthening dialogue between science and public policy;
- training specialists in water resources management;
- expanding international cooperation;
- applying geographic information systems;
- introducing innovative solutions for effective water resources management;
- launching the joint Water Diplomacy educational programme.

As a result of the meeting, a concrete action plan was developed, the next stages and timelines were agreed upon, and contact persons were appointed.

### Cooperation with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan

[On 29 August 2025, representatives of Al-Farabi KazNU and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan held a working meeting and prepared a roadmap for further cooperation](https://farabi.university/news/97828?lang=en).

The roadmap covers:

- environmental monitoring;
- the application of Earth remote-sensing technologies;
- the monitoring of natural processes;
- research on the dried seabed of the Aral Sea;
- the development of science-based solutions for ecosystem restoration;
- the use of KazNU’s scientific and technological capacity to address environmental challenges.

The preparation of the roadmap confirms the University’s engagement with a national government authority on environmental and water-security matters.

### Cooperation with Local and Regional Government Authorities

KazNU’s systematic engagement with public authorities is also demonstrated by [the international roundtable “Environmental Regulation and Control in Water Supply and Sanitation,” held on 30 March 2024](https://farabi.university/news/91707?lang=en).

The event brought together representatives of:

- the Department of Ecology and Environment of Almaty;
- the Balkhash-Alakol Basin Inspectorate;
- the National Hydrometeorological Service “Kazhydromet”;
- international research and educational institutions.

Participants discussed government measures related to water supply, sanitation, water-quality assessment, sustainable water use and environmental control.

This material is presented as additional evidence of KazNU’s long-term cooperation with government authorities at the local and regional levels.
